Topic: Jacksonville Beach Height Increase Referendum on May 16 Ballot

On March 20, the Jacksonville Beach City Council voted 5-2 to place a referendum on the May 16 ballot. This referendum will be asking voters if they support allowing an exception to the 35 foot height limit to allow a 55-foot building to be built on the Latham Plaza parking lot property owned by the City of Jacksonville Beach.

To help Jacksonville Beach voters understand all sides of this important issue, Beaches Watch is hosting a panel of participants who represent various perspectives on the issue. Jacksonville Beach Mayor Chris Hoffman will be discussing the City’s position in support of putting the height increase on the ballot. Georgette Dumont, representative from the Protect the Beach Life Political Action Committee, will be discussing the Political Committee’s position on the proposed height increase. Also on the panel will be Michelle Tipton, a representative from Better Beach 32250, a grassroots organization of Jacksonville Beach residents, to discuss their position on the proposed height increase.

Beaches Watch President Maria Mark said, “Vote by mail ballots will be going out on April 6 and early voting will be starting on May 1. Furthermore, what happens in Jacksonville Beach could impact Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach. It is important that Jacksonville Beach voters attend this meeting to learn about the proposed height increase, so they can make an informed decision when they vote on this important issue.”
