Beaches Watch Monthly Meeting

September 7, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Topic:  96 Sea Turtle Nests, 16 Jax Beach Charter Amendments, and a Protective Dune System:
It’s Been a Busy Season

Speakers: Jacksonville Beach Mayor Chris Hoffman and Kevin Brown, Beaches Sea Turtle Patrol Volunteer

What do the proposed Jacksonville Beach Charter Amendments, our sea turtle season, and our dune system have in common? Answer: There are a large number of all three. And on Wednesday, September 7, Beaches Watch will host a unique meeting in the Beaches Branch Public Library, 600 Third Street, Neptune Beach, Florida to help you understand how each topic impacts our quality of life at the beaches. The program begins at 7 p.m.

Jacksonville Beach Mayor Chris Hoffman and Volunteer Member of the Sea Turtle Patrol Kevin Brown will guide us through the topics. Mayor Hoffman will speak about the 16 proposed Jacksonville Beach city charter amendments. The amendments that voters will be asked to vote on include: making neutral all gender-specific references in the City Charter; clarifying what constitutes a full term when applying term limits to council members;  clarifying that certain Charter provisions and powers are granted and limited by Florida law;  eliminating compelled meeting attendance by council members and acknowledging supermajority requirements; three amendments concerning the City Attorney’s duties, compensation, and removal; and amendments addressing election procedures.

Mr. Brown, retired Fletcher science teacher and head of the marine science club, will address the current state of our dune system, how it impacts our beaches, and its impact on property and lives. He will also update the audience about this year’s busy sea turtle season. By the middle of August, our sea turtles left 96 nests on our sandy shores. He will help us understand how and why this turtle influx is meaningful.

Beaches Watch President Maria Mark said, “Sixteen charter amendments are a lot of amendments Jacksonville Beach voters will need to consider on election day. Please plan to attend this meeting so you can make an informed decision when it comes to these charter amendments. It has been an extremely busy year for sea turtle nesting. Mr. Brown will enlighten us on their significance and welfare and what we can do to continue their preservation for now and future generations.”

Questions can be submitted in advance via email to  info@beacheswatch.com no later than September 5. The audience will also have the opportunity to pose questions on the night of September 7.
